I was determined not to do any more book reviews. I have ADHD, and this means I will have to absolutely love a book to finish it. You saw how I reviewed ‘Red, White, and Royal Blue’ by Casey McQuiston. The only book review I ever posted on my old blog of ‘These Violet Delights’. However, since I’m blogging under a new domain name and a new hosting site. I decided take another crack at it.
I tried to write book reviews, but not typically. Once a month, I will do ‘Friday Faves’. I will feature one book that I absolutely, positively loved, and gush about my favorite parts and all the great things I love about it. I read M/M and F/F Romance, in particular, own voices BIPOC LGBTQ+ Romance. I read some of these books as part of my Rainbow Riot Book Club on discord, but sometimes I just want to do my own thing.
This week, I’m featuring ‘Better Off Red’ by author Rebekah Weatherspoon. Most people know Rebekah as a writer of Black romance and multiracial M/F romance. Her upcoming book is ‘If The Boots Fits’ which is a Black cowboy romance and a continuation of her ‘Cowboys of California’ series. It drops October 22nd, so you need to mosey your butts on over to her site so you can pre-order it.
Every sorority has its secrets…
And college freshman Ginger Carmichael couldn’t care less. She has more important things on her mind, like maintaining her perfect GPA. No matter how much she can’t stand the idea of the cliques and the matching colors, there’s something about the girls of Alpha Beta Omega—their beauty, confidence, and unapologetic sexuality—that draws Ginger in. But once initiation begins, Ginger finds that her pledge is more than a bond of sisterhood, it’s a lifelong pact to serve six bloodthirsty demons with a lot more than nutritional needs.
Despite her fears, Ginger falls hard for the immortal queen of this nest, and as the semester draws to a close, she sees that protecting her family from the secret of her forbidden love is much harder than studying for finals.
Things I Loved About This Book
This is the part of the post where I talk about what I absolutely loved. First, I LOVED all the freaking diversity! These days when I pick up a book, I automatically look for books by BIPOC authors and I get excited when those books are super diverse. But it gets better! We had everything from a Mexican Vampire Queen as the main character, Black, Asian, and even Indigenous vampires. This is the first time I think I can remember that I saw such a varied cast of vampires. Then the cherry on top was the inclusion of fat characters. Benita is a fat character that gets her own book in the second book of the series, ‘Blacker Than Blue’.
The thing I really loved above everything that this could book could have easily become just a simple porno movie plot, but it wasn’t. Ginger and Camila’s story had tons of heart, and at points, I cried. You easily start this book for the sex and but I quickly got invested in every story’s background.
I also want to dip into the world-building. Rebekah’s vampires are demons, and this isn’t the first time I have seen that. It a little similar to vampires from ‘Buffy: The Vampire Slayer’, but Rebekah takes that concept and creates a unique vampire mythos that as someone who loves all the things vampires was a pleasant surprise.
My Favorite Lines
“No, no. Rush, stupid. Like join a sorority.”
“Hell no.” I had just gotten used to sharing a broom closet worth of space with another human being. Our entire hall had a single shower. I was even getting over the fact I had to plan my masturbation me time around my roommate’s class schedule, but this was asking too much.
“They are very special. Are you attracted to my favorite pets?”
She winked at Danni behind me.
“Yes, but…” “But what?”
“I’m more attracted to you.”
“Honey, I’m an ex-pothead who married a mobster’s son then adopted a Black kid. You think I’m going to judge my only daughter for being gay?”
Buy This Book
‘Better Off Red’ is the first of three books. I’m telling you right now you will want to buy all the Vampire Sorority Series because ‘Better Off Red’ ends in a cliffhanger. You can buy ‘Better Off Red’, ‘Blacker Than Blue’, and ‘Soul To Keep’ on only Amazon right now. I would totally recommend this book to anyone looking for diverse and hot F/F urban paranormal romance.
