Blood and ash coated Dracula’s fingers. He grimaced as he pulled out his white pocket square and did his best to wipe the mess from his hands. Sometimes one must get their hands dirty, and this was one of them.

He looked down and sighed at the pile of ash that had once been his most trusted adviser that lay at his feet. Dracula shook his head and then his gaze traveled across the cavernous throne room.

The most powerful vampires within the Vampyrium were prostrate on their knees before him. This should be his ultimate triumphant. By outwitting his enemies, he systematically destroyed them until all that remained were piles of ash.

Dracula only felt empty.

With a sigh, he strode back to his gold ornate throne. Dracula didn’t acknowledge his three wives who sat alluring on the dais’s steps. He sat down and put his head in his hands. The room was silent. No one dared to move and risk Dracula’s attention.

Dracula had ruled the Vampyrium for six hundred years. He had replaced the name given to him by his mother and took on both the name and the duties attached to Dracula. He had killed thousands to sit on this throne, had the three most beautiful women in his bed, and had more riches than he could ever spend.

His gaze traveled back to where his wives sat staring at him patiently for his orders. Dracula had Vasilica with her long, riotous red hair, light brown skin, and thin, willowy body. Andrada and her dark blue back hair that fell just below her shoulders. Her body was rounder and more voluptuous than Vasilica and then finally sweet Ioana, with her long, dark blonde hair and big blue eyes.

Drake felt nothing.

Renfield stepped forward, ordering the servants to clean up the mess. Dracula’s lips twitch up in a smile at the thought of the remains of his former General Bohdan Sýkora now lying in a bin, waiting to be thrown with tonight’s trash.

With a sigh, Dracula turned to address his court. “After all I have done for the Vampyrium, I am met with a coup. We have had six hundred years of peace and prosperity. My scientists have developed synthetic blood, so no vampire has to risk hunger. We have become respected within the Conclave and the supernatural world. And yet, my closest advisers have plotted my death.”

There were murmurs, and Dracula put a hand up. “I have grown weary of these games. I am old and it’s time to leave the Vampyrium in the hands of younger and fresher minds.”

Vasilica shot to her feet, “You can’t be serious!”

“I am,” Dracula replied calmly. “I am stepping down and Carmilla will take my place.”

“That bitch!” Andrada she hissed.

Dracula sighed in frustration. His sister, Carmilla, and his wives never got along. In the Vampyrium, blood connections and power were all that mattered. Carmilla’s sire had been an out-of-control abomination that Dracula had personally put down. Instead of killing her, Dracula saw potential in Carmilla and adopted her as his sister.

His wives never let Carmilla forget where she came from, but his sister was too clever and powerful in her own right to let that stop her.

He had expected they would be angry about his choice, but he would not budge on this. He waved Vasilica and Andrada away and turned back to his court, who was watching the drama play out. “You are dismissed.”

One by one, his court bowed to him and hurried quickly out of the throne room. Renfield started to walk away but Dracula held up a hand in a silent order to stay. His wives stayed back as well and as soon as the last person left, they both spun and stared at him.”

“Are you just giving up?”

“You are really going to give the throne to Carmilla?”

“What’s going to happen to us?”

Drusilla ignored his other two wives and spun to Ioana. Her long blonde hair fell in waves and her blue eyes still gave the illusion of innocence after all of this time. “I’m setting you free.”

The three women jerked back, their eyes going wide.

“Don’t think I haven’t noticed how your affections have changed.” Dracula shook his head. “You all may have loved me once. But that time has passed. You barely touch me or speak to me unless you want something. “

Andrada stepped forward, reaching out to him, but Dracula stepped back. Andrada frowned and then turned to exchange looks with her lovers. Dracula could see the softness in their eyes as the other two women stared back at her. A softness that had long disappeared when they looked at him.

“You just can’t walk away from a four-hundred-year-old marriage,” Vasilica demanded, her hands on her hips.

“I think want…what do the young ones call it?” Dracula tapped his finger to his lips. “Ah, yes. I want a divorce.”

Vasilica screamed and charged him and Dracula in a fast blur of movement, dodged her attack, and then he grabbed her arms and slammed her hard into the ground. He kept his human visage on through the entire confrontation with Bodhan, but the attack from his wife stripped away the last of that humanity. His face morphed into something truly monstrous. His face was a map of short hard ridges, black veins traveled across his face, nearly blending into his dark umber skin. The pupils of his eyes disappeared into a deep black void.

Dracula roared down, exposing his long fangs. Vasilica turned and whimpered at him in fear. The others hurried over to kneel beside her. “Do not mistake my kindness for weakness.” With a huff, his face morphed back into his usual handsome face.

He glared at all of them and then spun on his heel and stormed out of the room. For the first time in six hundred years, Dracula was without any obligation. Nothing to pull on his time or energy and although he knew this was all for the best, Dracula couldn’t quite quench the fear of the unknown that lay in front of him.
